Honduras is among the most violent countries in the world. Children and youth under eighteen account for 15.9% of homicide victims. Large numbers of young people are subjected to sexual exploitation, with alarmingly high rates of sexual abuse and teenage pregnancy. One in two girls reports having experienced sexual violence. Beyond violence and exploitation, many children and adolescents in Honduras face severe food insecurity. With 73.6% of the population living in poverty, families often lack the resources to afford adequate nutrition. As a result, large numbers of children suffer from chronic malnutrition, preventable diseases, stunted growth, and anemia. Safe drinking water is also a critical challenge, particularly in rural areas, where 81% of households lack access to clean water.

The daily reality for Honduran children and youth is marked by hardships and insecurities far greater than those experienced by many of their peers around the world. They often go to bed hungry, drink contaminated water that makes them sick, and live with the constant fear of violence, exploitation, or death. Instead of enjoying a carefree childhood, they worry: Will I be safe tomorrow? Will I be forced into something against my will? Will I live to see another year? To compound these challenges, many lack the protective presence of their parents at home. 43% of children in Honduras do not live with their parents.

What is the Home of Miracles?

The Home of Miracles is a safe home where children and youth can live –
